I've made mention on this blog before that I role play as a creative outlet. It's a round robin story telling type thing where we each add our own piece to the story instead of rolling dice and drawing cards or what not. Anyway, the mechanics of the game isn't what matters in my post. It's the little piece of a conversation that opened my eyes a bit wider.
Let me set this up for you. It's set 20 years after a nuclear attack has decimated the United States Coastlines. Everyone who can has moved north.
Here's where I stumbled into the liberal mind of a 27 year old woman I've been role playing with for almost ten years.
Melissa: I've been using the premise that humans are resourceful enough to have found a way to reinstate some of their creature comforts
Melissa: such as fuel
Melissa: and ways to travel besides on foot
friend: see, and I've been going with the premise that there is very little fuel, very little food, etc.
friend: I think by that time, fuel would be an incredibly valuable commodity the upper-echelons get it everyone else has to barter and beg and steal
We then went on to the flesh out ideas and left the conversation where it was.
What I saw in that little snippet was someone who felt humans weren't capable of bouncing back. Only the wealthy would survive on the backs on the common man, make the common man have to beg borrow and steal to survive.
It's a typical liberal view. And truly the first time I've experienced it up close. I'm still astonished at her way of thinking. Only the upper echelon would have creature comforts. That may be true to some extent, but I don't see the human race just giving up. But I also so where that may be true in some places as well. We've already seen it in hurricane Katrina.
I have a problem seeing anyone as helpless. My momma didn't raise me that way. I'm not raising my boys that way either. And as resourcefully as my friend plays her characters, I don't see her being helpless either. I guess I'm just disturbed by her thinking that she's not helpless, but maybe everyone else around her is?

Helplessness is trained into the masses because it empowers the elites who are their masters...
Political thinkers from Plato and Aristotle to Montesquieu, Tocqueville and Hayek have always understood that one tried and true road to power is to stimulate resentment and dependence. Liberals live on this creed, and believe they are right in thinking this way because they are somehow smarter than the rest of the world. Fact is that they are simply blind to their own exploitation of dependency and resentment.
